 “Built for Backup”

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” — Proverbs 27:17

This verse has been on my heart, and it speaks right into the world of first responders. Whether you’re fighting fire, wearing the badge, or working the radio, you already know something God has been saying since the beginning: we were created for connection. None of us were designed to stand alone.

In the fire service, we see this truth every day. A second line off the same rig isn’t a real backup line. If that pump fails, both lines are in trouble. A true back-up line comes when a second apparatus brings its own water, its own pump, its own support. If one system goes down, the other keeps you safe. That’s what true backup looks like, and every firefighter knows how important it is to identify who your backup is ahead of time.

Law enforcement understands this just as deeply. You don’t clear a building alone. You don’t run a high‑risk stop without cover. You depend on partners who bring their own training, awareness, and courage. When things turn fast, the right backup can change everything. Part of the job is knowing who’s watching your six and being that steady presence for someone else.

And dispatchers live this truth in a way all their own. One dispatcher can only carry so much. When the calls start stacking or a voice comes over the radio with that unmistakable urgency, you need another dispatcher to slide in beside you, take the overflow, and help keep the scene steady. That kind of support in the comm center is every bit as important as the backup arriving on the street. Dispatchers know exactly who they can lean on, and who they need to be strong for.

Scripture tells us the same thing about our walk with God. He never intended us to go through life isolated. We were created for connection, with Him and with each other. Iron only sharpens iron when there’s contact… when we spend time together, speak honestly, encourage one another, and show up when life gets heavy. “Two are better than one… if either of them falls, one can help the other up.”  Ecclesiastes 4:9–10

The right people make us better. A wise friend helps us grow wiser. A loving friend stretches our capacity to love. A biblically grounded friend deepens our understanding of God’s Word. Scripture says it plainly: “Walk with the wise and become wise.”  Proverbs 13:20

And sharpening always has a purpose. A chef doesn’t sharpen a knife just so it looks good on the counter. Sharpening makes it effective, ready for its purpose. God does the same with us. He strengthens us so we can stand steady, serve well, and be a source of strength for others. He uses our relationships, on shift, in the station, in the patrol car, in the comm center, just about anywhere on the job, and in our daily lives, to grow us into who He’s called us to be.

So today, let this settle into your heart: identify your backup, on the job and in life. Know who God has placed around you to steady you, strengthen you, and speak truth when you need it most. And just as important, be that backup for someone else. Be the one who steps in, stands close, and helps carry the weight. That’s how God sharpens us. That’s how He grows us. That’s how we stay strong.

Something worth thinking about.

Prayer

Lord, you are our strength. Thank You for the people You’ve placed in our lives who sharpen us and help us grow. Show us who our backup is, on the job and in life, and teach us to be that steady support for someone else. Use our lives, our relationships, and our work to advance Your Kingdom. Bless us lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
